Many children living with complex medical conditions are also neurodivergent, and we recognise the importance of understanding each child’s unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world.

Therapeutic support is tailored to each child and family. The approaches used will depend on the child’s goals, developmental stage and presenting concerns.


Approaches may include:


• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – supporting children and adolescents to manage difficult thoughts and feelings while building psychological flexibilit

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – supporting children and adolescents to manage difficult thoughts and feelings while building psychological flexibility and focusing on what matters most to them.


• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – helping children understand the links between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and developing practical coping strategies.


• Parent-based and attachment-informed approaches – supporting parents in understanding and responding to their child’s emotional and behavioural needs, particularly in the context of medical treatment.


• Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – when appropriate, this approach may be used to support children who have experienced medical trauma or distressing treatment experiences.
