Welcome

Paediatric Colorectal Psychology offers specialist psychological support for children and their families navigating complex bowel and bladder conditions. We focus on supporting children in their medical journey, emotional development and social participation. We recognise that these experiences can be challenging and at times overwhelming for both children and their families. Our aim is to provide a safe, compassionate space where children and families can build resilience, confidence and a greater sense of wellbeing.

Founded by Dr Kim-Michelle Gilson, Senior Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience supporting children with paediatric colorectal conditions at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

About

What is Paediatric Colorectal Psychology?

Paediatric colorectal psychology is a specialised area of psychology that supports children and families navigating the emotional and behavioural challenges associated with bowel conditions, associated bladder difficulties and their medical care.

Children living with conditions such as chronic constipation, Hirschsprung disease or anorectal malformations often face challenges beyond the physical aspects of their condition. Ongoing treatments, procedures and concerns about accidents can affect confidence, emotional wellbeing and everyday participation.

Psychological support helps children and families manage these challenges and engage with treatment more confidently. Care may occur alongside medical management and may involve collaboration with hospital teams.

For many children and families, bowel conditions can influence confidence, independence, friendships, school participation and everyday life.

Treatment routines can also be challenging at times. Children with bowel and bladder conditions may experience:

  • embarrassment or shame related to accidents (soiling or wetting)
  • anxiety around toileting or hospital procedures
  • difficulty engaging with treatment routines
  • challenges with friendships, school participation or self-esteem

Psychological support helps children build confidence, develop coping skills and feel more supported in managing their condition and treatment.
